What Drugs Are Available for Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

IBS drugs have had a long history of disappointing results. Because the origins and causes of IBS are not well-documented, current drugs have generally failed to make the problem go away, so to speak. However, there are some drugs on the market today that are enjoying some success. Keep in mind that these drugs do not treat the syndrome itself; they merely work to alleviate the severity of its symptoms. Also, please do not try these drugs without a medical prescription. They can be quite powerful, in some cases fatal, if used inappropriately.

Zelnorm

Zelnorm, with the generic name tegaserod maleate, is a drug which treats the symptoms of constipation. Zelnorm works by increasing the action of serotonin in the gut, which leads to faster motility. It relieves abdominal pains, stomach bloating, and constipation.  It comes in tablet form and is intended to be taken for short periods only; not for indefinite periods of time. Its effectiveness tends to wane after a few weeks or months of regular use.

LotroneX

Lotronex, with the generic name alosetron hydrochloride, is a drug which treats the symptoms of diarrhea. It blocks the action of serotonin in the gut and decreases motility. In other words, it has the exact opposite effect that Zelnorm does. It is one of the most widely used drugs for IBS symptoms today. It is taken in tablet form.

Before you use Lotronex, however, be aware that it has had its share of problems. It was withdrawn from shelves in year 2000 because of reports that it may have caused some deaths. Cases also surfaced where the drug led to serious constipation. Due to insistent demand, however, Lotronex was back on the market after a couple of years.

Amitiza

Amitiza (lubiprostone) is a treatment for chronic constipation in adults. If you have been suffering from constipation for a relatively long period of time, this drug is ideal for you.

Amitiza is often prescribed to patients who achieve less than three bowel movements in seven days. By improving the secretion of fluid in the intestines, the drug makes stools easier to pass.

The aforementioned drugs can be quite powerful and should not be used without a prescription. You should never buy them on the internet or from an unlicensed source  the chances of receiving counterfeit products are just too high. If the use of the drugs produces any unpleasant side affects, be sure to discontinue use and consult your physician.
